Manager Darrell Clarke made two changes from last Friday’s 2-0 win at Plymouth Argyle as Ellis Harrison returned to feature for the first time since defeat at Oxford in November, while Dennis Politic started his first league game since our 2-2 draw with Forest Green Rovers at Vale Park in October. Gavin Massey and Dan Butterworth moved to the bench. The Vale started brightly and created a brilliant opportunity to open the scoring with just 90 seconds on the clock as Harrison judged the bounce of the ball well and played in Politic, who was denied by an excellent block from Rovers defender Bobby Thomas. On just seven minutes, Clarke’s side created another chance as James Wilson won possession high up the pitch on the right and threaded a pass into the path of Harrison, who saw his low and curled effort excellently saved by James Belshaw in the Rovers goal.

Josh Coburn then fired a powerful effort wide of Jack Stevens’ left-hand post as the opening 15 minutes saw both sides go close in search of an early opener. Nathan Smith then had to be alert to deny Lewis Gordon with a last-ditch challenge as the Rovers winger looked to break into the penalty area. Just after the half hour mark, Scott Sinclair played in Coburn on the right of the penalty area before Stevens made a low sliding save at his near post. From the resulting corner, Jordan Rossiter saw a volley from the edge of the area diverted behind by Tom Conlon, who blocked bravely.

Vale continued to search for a way back into the game and Jones was the next to be denied as his header from a Worrall corner looked goal-bound, only to be cleared by the Posh backline. However, the hosts put the result beyond doubt when the Vale were dispossessed in midfield and substitute Jack Marriott played in Ward, who broke into the area and finished beyond Stevens. Smith almost scored a late consolation for the Vale, though his header from Worrall’s deflected cross was wide of Bergström’s left-hand post. In five minutes of additional time at the end of the 90, Harrison glanced a header wide from a Cass cross, though the Welsh striker couldn’t grab the goal another battling performance deserved.
Taylor, who featured in the majority of the hosts Championship matches last season, looked a threat from midfield in the opening phases of the game and he saw a powerful effort from 25 yards deflected just wide. The Vale lost Funso Ojo with just over 20 minutes played as the Belgian midfielder sustained an injury and was replaced by Tom Conlon. Five minutes later, the hosts went ahead through Clarke-Harris as the striker finished for his first of the afternoon and sixth goal of the season. Nathan Smith had done well to initially win possession back from Ricky-Jade Jones, who broke for the hosts, though Jones recovered to pinch the ball back from the Vale defender, before finding Kwame Poku, who played in Clarke-Harris to finish at close range. Moments later, Josh Knight was denied an acrobatic second at the back post by an excellent Dan Jones block.

Ten minutes before half-time, Clarke-Harris did double the hosts advantage, with Poku the provider again, this time from the right of the penalty area where he crossed for the striker to slide in his seventh league goal of the campaign. Jack Stevens denied Clarke-Harris a first-half hat-trick in the final few seconds the first 45 minutes as the striker met a floated cross to the back post and powerfully headed downwards only to be denied by a smart low save from the Vale’s keeper. The Vale were forced to defend their penalty area on a couple of occasions early in the second half and Clarke-Harris went close to scoring a third with an audacious effort from the left that crashed back off the post.
Port Vale vs Charlton Athletic on 19 Nov 22 - Match CentreDanny Butterworth produced a beautiful second half solo goal to secure Vale the three points against Charlton Athletic at Vale Park. Our number 26’s moment of brilliance came just before the hour mark to fire Vale into the lead, which in turn gave us victory. The move started at the back when David Worrall drilled forward a lovely long ball, which Butterworth took down expertly, before driving into the box and firing low into the bottom left-hand corner. We made five changes to the side that faced Oxford United last weekend, with Jack Stevens returning in between the sticks for Vale, and James Wilson starting up top after coming back from injury.
League One’s top scorer Jonson Clarke-Harris scored twice for the hosts, before Joe Ward scored a late third as the Vale pushed for a way back into the game. Manager Darrell Clarke named an unchanged side from last weekend’s League One victory over Shrewsbury Town, though Tom Pett and Brad Walker returned to the bench. The Vale started the brighter of the two sides at the Weston Homes Stadium, with some early final third entries and crosses into the box testing the hosts’ resolve. Jack Taylor headed off target from a Harrison Burrows cross in Peterborough’s first attempt on goal before the Vale broke and almost went ahead in spectacular fashion as Ellis Harrison aimed to beat Lucas Bergström from the halfway line, though the striker’s effort bounced wide of the vacant Posh goal.
Burton Albion vs Sheffield United highlightsHello and welcome to our live blog of Sheffield United's pre-season friendly at Burton Albion. It's fixture number five of the summer as Paul Heckingbottom looks to add the finishing touches to his preparations for the coming campaign. He will be wanting to see much more from his players than in the last two outings. Successive defeats to Scunthorpe and Mansfield have left a lot to be desired - especially at the back. United have shipped six goals in those two games and the Blades boss will be hoping United are less generous in defence tonight.
A much improved opening half hour on recent performances 31 mins KEY EVENTGOAL UNITED 1-0United lead through Daniel Jebbison, who slipped in on goal and shows great composure to round the keeper and slot home against the side he spent the first part of last season on loan at 30 minsNathan HemminghamSaved from Coulibaly Oli Arblaster does really well under pressure to fashion a chance on the edge of the area, shaping to shoot but finding Coulibaly but his effort is comfortable for the keeper28 minsNathan HemminghamGreat save Amissah The Blades keeper is called into action for the first real time and he tips a curling free-kick from Davis Keillor-Dunn round his post at full stretch.
Our first chance of the match came after 15 minutes through the returning James Wilson, but after a nice one-two with Tom Conlon, his effort from distance flew over the bar. The first half was a cagey affair between the two sides, and Wilson perhaps had the best chance of the period when he drove to the edge of the area before striking a low-driven shot that went just wide of the post. The Valiants nearly found the breakthrough via Mal Benning in the 54th minute when he curled an effort just wide of the far post after being found by Butterworth. Charlton’s second-half substitute, Chuks Aneke, produced the visitors' first meaningful effort of the match, but after a swivel to break free of a Vale defender, he couldn’t keep his effort down.

On the stroke of half-time, Harrison was presented with another chance as he met Conlon’s deep free kick at the back post but didn’t make a clean connection to test Belshaw in the Rovers goal. The second half remained as close as the first and it took until the hour mark for either side to create a clear opportunity, with Vale thankful to keeper Stevens, who denied Coburn at his near post after a well-worked move from the hosts.

At the other end, the Vale tested Bergström on the break as Harrison broke through the hosts defence before Gavin Massey set the ball into Danny Butterworth, who curled an effort at goal that the keeper comfortably saved. Clarke introduced Dennis Politic and David Worrall from the bench just after the hour mark as the Vale boss looked to influence the game. And Worrall quickly created an opening for Harrison, with a cross from the right headed narrowly off target by the striker, 25 minutes from time.
