Huddersfield Town's bolstered midfield offers two different types of headacheHe may have turned 34 last week, but Jonathan Hogg showed against Sheffield United that he still has a significant part to play for the Terriers this season. In fact, we’ll go one further: this may be the situation where they need him the most. Lest we forget that Hogg was Huddersfield Town’s player of the season last time they were in the depths of this kind of relegation battle, just the season before last. The midfielder played some of the best football of his career in 2020/21, dragging the side’s standards up from the centre of the park and playing the experienced tempo-maker in a young team beset by injuries. There’s nothing flashy about Hogg; never has been.

But he knows how to do the basics consistently well. For a player who is often criticised for dragging the team too deep off the ball, he was instrumental in helping Town get forward more often on the ball at Bramall Lane. Read more:Shock as Huddersfield Town stadium management firm at risk of administration The stats speak for themselves. Off the ball, Hogg was imperious as ever: only Tom Lees made more successful tackles, and only Josh Ruffels made more interceptions. But on the ball he made a clear difference too. The man Hogg directly replaced at half time, David Kasumu, had had just 17 touches; Hogg would take 41. Only three Town players finished the game with more completed passes than Hogg, all of them the central defenders who played the whole 90 minutes. In the first half, Town had just 25% possession; in the 20 minutes between Hogg’s introduction and their next substitution, they had 60%, with Hogg having the most of any Town player outside the back three.

To which you might reasonably say: well, so what? Fat lot of good it did them, after all. And you’re right: the work that Jonathan Hogg does from a deeper-lying midfield role is not going to make a huge impact on what Town do in the final third, which is where most of their most glaring issues are to be found. What Hogg does do is offer a platform for other players to go and make a difference. The puzzle Mark Fotheringham needs to solve now is to find a system and a selection that allows that to happen; and the difficulty the head coach faces is that playing his three best-performing midfielders of the season so far is unlikely to make that happen. A midfield trio of Hogg, Kasumu and Etienne Camara does not scream goals and creativity, and at least one of them will surely need to be sacrificed – even if only on a game-by-game basis – to get more creative players into the side.

A 4-2-3-1 feels the most sensible approach, especially as it would allow Jack Rudoni to push forward into a role he is more comfortable with. Whether Fotheringham goes with that or not, Fotheringham has some tough decisions to make. Camara has arguably been Town’s best outfielder this season (though Michal Helik may argue that point), and Kasumu is their best ball-winner and a strong ball-carrier. But Hogg is the only one of the three with the experience to know when to put his foot on the ball and steer teammates away from the blind alleys they constantly keep going down – as the difference between him and Kasumu made clear at the weekend. We’d love to call it a nice headache to have, but the truth is that unless the players with more creative duties start doing their jobs better, it’s all a case of rearranging deckchairs on the Titanic.
