Ben Fox also saw a shot deflected over and Hoskins curled a free kick into the side netting in a strong period of pressure. Louis Appere couldn’t quite get his shot away after breaking clear of the Mansfield defence before the home side were forced into an early change, Anthony Hartigan coming on for Riley Harbottle. The Cobblers were having the better of things in the first half and Fox fired wide following another flowing move but despite their impressive play it was goalless at the break. Appere was looking lively and saw a shot deflected behind after making a bursting run early in the second half while Hoskins forced a good save from Christy Pym.

Shaun McWilliams and Akin Odimayo came into the Cobblers side for the trip to top of the table Stevenage as Jon Brady switched to a central back three. Ben Fox missed the game through suspension while top goalscorer Sam Hoskins, Tyler Magloire and Josh Eppiah remained sidelined through injury. Former Cobblers striker Danny Rose started for Stevenage. In a dramatic start to the game, the Cobblers were awarded a penalty with only 30 seconds played when Louis Appere was brought down in the area by Terence Vancooten. Appere dusted himself down to take the penalty which he dispatched with aplomb.
Mitch Pinnock drove a shot just wide from the edge of the area and Taye Ashby-Hammond made a good save from Sam Sherring as the Cobblers, who were showing no signs of letting up, had an appeal for a second penalty turned down by referee Geoff Eltringham. Stevenage manager Steve Evans was sent to the stands after being shown two yellow cards in rapid succession but the home side were back on level terms on 35 minutes, Danny Rose equalising against the run of play. The home side then had a chance to go in front just before half-time but Dan Sweeney headed over from Alex Gilbey’s free kick. Jamie Reid shot straight at Lee Burge and also had a goal ruled out for off-side in the opening stages of the second half while for the Cobblers Ali Koiki shot wide and Kieron Bowie had an effort deflected behind following a good counter attack and flick on by Appere.
Jack Sowerby was back on the bench after a bout of illness while for Mansfield there was no place in the matchday 18 for former Cobbler John-Joe O’Toole. Kieron Bowie was almost in for the opening goal inside 30 seconds after being played in by Jon Guthrie and Sam Hoskins had a shot blocked behind in a bright start from the Cobblers.

In a tight second half it needed a good defensive header from Sam Sherring to deny Rhys Oates while substitute Josh Eppiah shot just wide from the edge of the area. It was a Stags substitute though who eventually made the breakthrough, Will Swan scoring on the follow-up after a terrific initial save by Lee Burge. Sam Hoskins stunning volley ensured the Cobblers weren’t behind for long however, Mitch Pinnock’s cross setting up the chance for Hoskins whose finish evoked memories of former West Ham striker Paolo di Canio. It earned the Cobblers a point and although there performance perhaps warranted all three Jon Brady’s side kept themselves firmly inside the automatic promotion places.
Brady was still without six of his first team squad for the 2pm kick-off with Ben Fox and Danny Hylton suspended, Tyler Magloire, Josh Eppiah and Ali Koiki injured and Jonny Maxted missing through personal reasons. Cardiff City striker Chanka Zimba, who had a loan spell at Sixfields last season, was amongst the substitutes for Newport. Having picked up four points from Graham Coughlan’s first two games in charge, Newport came to Sixfields in confident mood and they took the lead from a long throw inside two minutes, Omar Bogle scoring from close range. An Adam Lewis free kick drew a comfortable save from Lee Burge while for the Cobblers, Mitch Pinnock, fresh from signing a new contract, saw a shot blocked at close range by a Newport defender. The Exiles were posing a real threat and it needed a good reaction save from Burge to prevent Mickey Demetriou doubling the visitors' lead.
Max Dyche replaced Odimayo in the Cobblers first change of the afternoon with Stevenage bringing on one time Cobblers loanee Luke Norris for fellow frontman Reid. Kieron Bowie restored the Cobblers lead on 82 minutes, the Fulham loanee scoring on the half-volley after being played in by substitute Danny Hylton. Stevenage weren’t behind for long though and it was soon 2-2, Alex Gilbey getting the final touch from a corner. The drama wasn’t over though and less than two minutes later the Cobblers were ahead for a third time, Shaun McWilliams volleying home after some good work by Pinnock and Hylton in the build-up. Hylton had a chance to make it 4-2 in stoppage time but slid his shot wide and the Cobblers striker wasn’t to see the game out after being shown a straight red card for a push on a Stevenage defender.
Burge then pulled off another fine stop to deny Bogle one-on-one before recovering quickly to also save from Nathan Moriah-Welsh on the follow-up. Livewire Bogle had a shot tipped on to the post by Burge in a real purple patch of pressure from the visitors but having survived that spell, the Cobblers won a corner from which Jon Guthrie headed over and Kieron Bowie drew a save from Joe Day following a good move by the home side. Jon Brady made a triple change for the second half with Jack Sowerby, Akin Odimayo and former Newport defender Ryan Haynes replacing Marc Leonard, Harvey Lintott and Kieron Bowie.
