Bath vs Newcastle Falcons - Oddspedia
Eddie Howe's side will be looking to continue their excellent form. No team in the Premier League has collected more points than the Magpies since the start of October, with Newcastle (opens in new tab) winning six and drawing one of their last seven fixtures. They have risen up to third in the table as a result and currently look like genuine contenders for the Champions League places. Qualifying for any European competition would be a fine achievement in Howe's first full season in charge. But many Newcastle fans would prefer to see the team lift a trophy. After all, it has been a long time without one for English football's sleeping giant.

Newcastle have not won major silverware since an FA Cup triumph in 1955. The club's supporters crave a long-overdue trophy. Crystal Palace (opens in new tab) also head into Wednesday's match on the back of a win at the weekend. Patrick Vieira's side left it late to see off West Ham (opens in new tab), with Michael Olise notching the winner deep into second-half stoppage time. That was Palace's first league triumph away from home of 2022/23. Now up into the top half of the table, Vieira's side will be looking to go one better than the 0-0 draw they managed at St James' Park in September.
Both managers are likely to shuffle their packs ahead of Premier League matches this weekend. Newcastle will have to make do without Alex Isak, Emil Krafth, Matt Ritchie and Paul Dummett, but Joelinton and Callum Wilson are available again. Palace will be unable to call upon the services of James McArthur, Nathan Ferguson and Chris Richards for the long trip to the northeast. Odsonne Edouard is unlikely to be risked, and there could be starts for fringe players like James Tomkins, Jean-Philippe Mateta, Malcolm Ebiowei, Will Hughes and Jairo Riedewald. Watch highlights of Leicester Tigers' win over Bath RugbyLeicester Tigers kicked off 2021 with a bang by defeating Bath at the Mattioli Woods Welford Road. After weeks of uncertainty following the Covid-19 outbreak within the camp that forced the Newcastle Falcons match to be cancelled - Tigers - without their head coach Steve Borthwick present - came up against a Bath side brimming with internationals. Borthwick wasn't the only Covid-19 related absentee for the hosts but they delivered the goods to earn a thrilling victory in a match that saw six tries scored and 67 points! Our reporters Bobby Bridge and Adam Dickinson were at the ground to bring you all of the action as well as follow-up stories.
With Wilkinson kicking two conversions and a penalty during that early onslaught, Bath still had a mountain to climb despite lock Steve Borthwick crashing over from close range. Bath fly-half Chris Malone slotted a penalty before the break, and even though Newcastle had lock Luke Gross yellow-carded they were in total control approaching the second period. Wilkinson landed the first-half of a drop-goal double on 56 minutes to ease Newcastle's nerves and although that heralded Bath's best spell of the game, there was no way back for the home side.

Bath 18 - 33 NewcastleJonny Wilkinson enjoyed an armchair ride in front of acting England head coach Andy Robinson as Newcastle brushed Bath aside at a sold-out Recreation Ground. Fly-half Wilkinson, favourite to captain England in their November Tests against Canada, South Africa and Australia, booted 13 points in a comfortable away victory. The injury-time sending-off of Newcastle back row forward Phil Dowson could not disguise a quality Newcastle performance that saw them score four tries and claim an important bonus point. By the time Dowson departed, following a punch-up involving both packs, Newcastle were home and dry as they built on their victory over Premiership new boys Worcester last weekend. With Wilkinson in the driving seat, Newcastle blew Bath away inside the opening 26 minutes as flanker Mike McCarthy, Tom May and his fellow wing Michael Stephenson all capitalised on sloppy Bath defence.
Bath wing Brendon Daniel scored two tries during the final quarter, but his contribution was disrupted by May's second try which made the game safe. Referee Steve Lander reached for his red card during the closing minutes after a needless brawl which owed much to Bath's frustration. Dowson was shown a straight red, and he can now expect a minimum three-week ban, while May was sin-binned. Daniel's second try gave a capacity 10, 400 crowd - a Bath home record in the professional era - something to shout about, but typically, it was Wilkinson who had the final word with his second drop goal just before the final whistle. Newcastle have opened their Premiership campaign with successive away victories against Worcester and Bath, registering nine points in the process. Bath, meanwhile, have yet to break their points duck, which is a far cry from last season. Bath finished top at the end of the regular 22-game league season, only to see their title aspirations disappear when they lost to Wasps at Twickenham in a championship shoot-out.
